What G.I.V.E. Is

In recognition of the problems faced by many communities in Kenya, a group of UBC students formed GIVE in 2005. Their original mandate was to bring HIV/AIDS education to areas of Kenya with a high prevalence of HIV infection with the belief that knowledge is the first step to combating this pandemic. Since 2005, GIVE has worked exclusively in the community of Kanyawegi, which borders Lake Victoria; it is estimated that up to 1 in 4 people is infected with HIV, and we can attest to the fact that every community member has been affected by the devastating epidemic.

Though providing aid to those struggling with HIV was incredibly valuable to all involved, GIVE realized that the epidemic could only be reversed if the village and surrounding areas can break the poverty cycle. GIVE today is currently structured with four 'pillars' to help the Kanyawegi villagers - HIV Education, HIV Health, Food Security and Nutrition, and Economic Development.
